Charlie Mariano about max.bab: "I have just finished listening to max.bab's new CD. When I hear music being performed by young musicians of such high quality, then I can rest assured that jazz is in a very healthy state. Bless these young guys, they play as if they have been together for 20 years!!! We will be hearing a lot from all of them in the future." |

Liner Notes
"The Music Of Charlie Mariano"
I had been trying to convince Charlie Mariano for years to collect all of his compositions in one place. One day, he then actually came and had a music book with about thirty of his pieces. Many of them were known, even "hits", such as "Crystal Bells" and "Sleep my Love". But there were also unknown pieces, never released such as "Down the Kavery" or rarely played pieces such as "Zana" and "Ballade". What a treasure! Charlie is such a fantastic saxophonist that you can easily forget that he is also a composer. But then his compositions are almost like a Real Book for the musicians, who play regularly with him.
In December 2005, we were together in Bangalore in southern India to record "Many Ways" with R.A. Ramamani. We were finished after two days and still had half a day of booked studio time left. We spontaneously started to record a few of his pieces. In April 2006, we then met for another day in my Koolhouse Studio in Bornheim and completed this CD.
Charlie's music makes so happy. The far-reaching depth of feeling of his sound and intensive, spiritual interaction make this CD a very special experience for me and hopefully for other listeners too. I took the liberty of adding a few of my own compositions, which we regularly play, to the CD. Although Charlie did not compose them, they were written for him and his playing leaves no doubt that these pieces are also his music.
Regards and thanks to all the musicians, who have already played Charlie's music with him. I have learned a lot from you. regardless of whether we already played together or not. You know it; we are a family! And I would like to say in the name of all of us: Thanks Charlie! Thanks for your playing, for your music and for your big heart!
